OLED_Pfleiderer: Luminous surfaces

© Prof. Kilian Stauß

The aim of this research project was to investigate how planar, furniture-based lighting can be used in shopfitting and store design and what advantages such lighting has over conventional architectural lighting.

Project background

The Pfleiderer company focuses on the production of wood-based materials and furniture surfaces. The company, which has been in existence for over 100 years, is one of the largest in its sector in Europe. This leading position is constantly being expanded through continuous research and development work in a wide variety of areas.

Project objective

The aim was to investigate how planar, furniture-based lighting can be used in shopfitting and store design and what advantages such lighting has over conventional architectural lighting.

Project procedure

Research into different initial situations at the point of sale, lighting tests on a 1:1 scale with planar light, preliminary models and finally room prototypes on a 1:1 scale were used to present, verify and confirm the respective theories. It was shown that, on the one hand, planar, furniture-based light offers significantly more and better possibilities for illuminating the goods.

The exhibits on display simply look better. On the other hand, these illuminated surfaces can be integrated into intelligent control systems that can highlight product groups and individual products on a customer-specific basis.

Innovation

Luminous and intelligent furniture is becoming an important player in the Internet of Things.
